The story about an invasion of aliens from Mars was broadcast across the country. The format of the play made it sound as if it was breaking news. This technique of performing a radio play with such realism was new and unfamiliar to many of the weekly listeners. The format sounded like an authentic news bulletin and the actors were reporters covering the story of unworldly ships that had crash landed on a farm just outside Grovers Mills New Jersey. The radio program was so convincing that a large number of people mistook it for a real news broadcast.
