We definitely got closer to earthquake prediction in terms of where and what magnitude a perspective event could be. We also can use some statistics as to long-term predictions (years). We definitely got closer to earthquake prediction in terms of where and what magnitude a perspective event could be. We also can use some statistics as to long-term predictions (years). But short-term prediction (days-months) is a formidable issue because of poor understanding of stress-strain field distribution in inhomogeneous media and how the field transforms in precursors. The precursors in barometric field are not new. There were a lot attempts to use them in short-term prediction, based on so-called theory of short-living crust deformations that can even be reflected in a local barometric field. So I am not sure if we are one step closer to predict. And how many steps like that to take?
