The role of <EM>taliks </EM> in the current atmospheric CH<SUB>4</SUB>

of gas hydrates could cause catastrophic consequences within a few decades. Shallow bottom sediment and
underlying permafrost have warmed approximately 15°C since the time they originated. The implications
