The dog has seen people treat his master like a shell, but still remembers the hand that fed it and showed it when it was good, is the same hand. He now knows his master is absolutely defenseless, beside the defense the dog displays for his master's character. The dog will always hear his master's voice. While we have gone deaf

Heartbreaking.
Yes. Yet somehow... The words escape me. There is beauty in such devotion and love. Heartbreak in the confusion and loss yes, but...

I know what you mean, kmcolo. I thought the same thing. It certainly speaks to the type of love and devotion of which a dog is capable, earnest and sincere.

It is interesting the very different reactions that these photos elicit in people. I printed it out and got some heavy negatives from the photos. Loss can be a very difficult thing to face and feel.

POPPED for BobbuRutan's comments. Though an old saying, true, nonetheless.

So sad! I love and own dogs and know the loyalty they express. Feel so badly for this little one; not to mention the person under the white sheet!

It makes me want to outlive my pets. They are here with me at work. I look down and speak. They look up with love. Who else will understand them like I do.

This is the only background I can find on the photo: São Paulo, Brazil - a homeless guy who was killed for some unknown reason. He had this street dog who followed him around.

if i have 2chose (and i do)) as mona mentioned it is really more heartwarming than heartbreaking.

pain is pain, we live with it. yet meeting an exposure an happening in life human animal or any other that elevates you - that`s really precious & heartwarming.

O God! There's nothing like the love and loyalty of a dog. (Upon discovering my mother's body, her little dog was lying on her chest. She growled when anyone tried to remove her. She lay there until the undertakers arrived. And until her own death, two years later, she waited all day, every day, at the gate ... waiting, waiting, waiting)

michellezm I've heard from another friend with a story similiar to your mother's circumstances. There's no question that our pets grieve and have a sense of loss. We're their entire world - it revolves around us.

We are not so different from this dog.

Mammals share a portion of the brain called the Liminal Brain, which lies, as the name suggests, on the boundary between the instinctive reptilian brain and the analytical Neocortex. Lesions on this membrane in the brain can produce sociopathic behavior. It is presumed that this is the portion of our brain that harbors our senses of empathy and compassion.

Empathy is an incredibly striking trait, basically unique to mammals. It allows us to extend our consciousness to entities beyond our bodies, to mentally travel beyond our mere solipsistic physical experience, and to feel about others the same way we would feel about ourselves. This is the mercurial...

ouyangwulong that's great information and very good insight; the person under the sheet alone without a dog is almost an image seen all too often on television and the news.

When you add the dog to the visual, the person under the sheet is not so much a stranger anymore.
