When Richard Dawkins described religion as a form of child abuse he was roundly criticized. In this short clip we are witness to children (10 and 14 years old) who are "willing to die for Islam". I'd like to hear how Dawkins critics rationalize that.

How can anyone rationalize this incident or so many other examples of how religion is harmful to our children? The hypocrisy of it all is appalling. And believe me, it is not must Islam, but so many other religions that preach peace, family, love and protection of children and then use these young people as cannon fodder physically and psychologically.

Don't forget about Jesus Camp
Indeed. My kids have been pertering me to watch it. It's on my list...

I've seen short clips and even in small doses it's made my blood boil.

It is not religion itself but the misuse of religion that is causing problems here. That does not come from the religion itself, but from those who wield it as a weapon.

Hitler advocated atheism, yet his youth were willing to die for him.

Of course. The old Hitler/atheist connection. How could I've forgotten that. Maybe because it's made up. Whatever Hitler's religious leanings were they certainly were not atheistic. Why not mention true atheists like Lenin or Polpot? Of course the concept of atheism had as much to do with their brutal dictatorships as the non-belief in Santa Claus did. But it's a common ploy to try to conflate the political aims of these arguably psychotic leaders to the non-belief in a deity. It's an argument based on emotional content and not the facts. Better luck next time.

You made my point much more clearly than I could.
If Hitler was not an atheist, I apologize for the mistake-
HOWEVER, I was not using Hitler as a ploy to in any way demean atheism or say that it was the cause of his tyranny. What I was trying to say was that it is the individual who is responsible for the abuse of power- not the religion.
In the same way that you cannot say all people of a certain race are bad, so you cannot say that all religion is bad.

Ha! So now someone who questions religion is a racist?

I saw a quote recently: "I don't know if faith can move mountains but I've seen what it can do to skyscrapers." Another is: "Good people will do good things, and bad people will do bad things.
But for good people to do bad things -- that takes religion."

Now, to get back to your original comment. Nowhere do I make the claim that religious believers are "bad people". And where did you come up with the notion that I can't say that religion is bad? As far as I'm aware we are not yet living in a theocracy s...

When I was young I had to go through different sections of christianty and was exposed to many different versions of the bible and thought pursued me. I was placed in a summer bible school and I annoyed everyone with my questions, eventually a teacher said the only way to reach heaven is through jesus. With full and unblatant honesty I said " I'm sorry but I just don't believe that." I was given a stare and remarks but I will never forget that day at a simple age of 7 I was truly honest and never had fear. Why are we to condem such children to waver on their abilities and heartsets never to take them as they are and forever to see them as less than for our condolences.

"When Richard Dawkins described religion as a form of child abuse he was roundly criticized."
apparently you are defending his view. In essence you are saying that religion is child abuse- doesn't that mean you think religious people are bad?
"But for good people to do bad things -- that takes religion."
No- apparently Hitler could make people do it without religion. My point- it is the individual not the religion at fault- just as one bad apple doesn't spoil the whole bunch of say, Latinos, one or several idiots doing bad things in the name of religion in no way proves that ll religion is bad.

Please point to the orphanages, hospitals and the like that were started by atheists.

Depends on what you mean by bad. Do they do their children a disservice by forcing religious beliefs on them? Yes. Dawkins states that we don't label children "republican children" because their parents are republicans (or democratic). But we think nothing odd of labeling children of Christian parents as Christian children as though religion was not a choice.

My point above being that giving to a charity has nothing to do with believing in a god or gods.
It's written on your heart. That's because someone made the universe and it's rules.
You can say anything you want- that doesn't mean it is true.
Oh really? The implication is a strawman. That without a belief in god or gods someone is amoral or at least his morals and ethics are up for debate. How does believing in superstitions make someone a moral being. What possible difference could it make? I don't think that you would want to enter into a debate about the relative merits of morals taken out of the bible and those not based on religious dogma from 2000 years ago. And what I ...
