I know some teachers are homework happy, but I honestly can't say the same for my daughter's teacher thus far. She generally doesn't come home with excessive amounts of homework unless if she's been out of school for an appointment or been sick. Usually if that's the case, my husband who's college is nearby will swing by the school and pick up her work and we'll try and get what we can done that day so she won't be behind when she returns and won't have a ton to do the next day for homework. Though I do remember the homework nightmares I used to have growing up. I used to carry a 30-40 pound backpack throughout school because my locker on the other end of school. On top of that was the... homework happy....sounds like my teacher I stopped turning the homework in, out of protest. I'm afraid to bring it up at PTO for not being politically correct for my ap calc class, homework isnt mandatory, and i find that i do a lot better in it because i dont get frustrated doing tedious things i know i can do, yet when i need the practice, its there. I've noticed that much of the homework children are given is to fill the deficit of what they didn't get to do at school or as some rote repetition. This is something to rebel about. However, homework properly dealt with should not be to fill in gaps, rather, its purpose is more about the development of self independent study, research, self motivation, self discipline, practice which hones one's development further, and the like. |
