laceym says: First, the leaders in the Democratic Party have given these issues as little attention as the Republicans. Democrats in control of the House and Senate have taken no action to challenge and dismantle these abuses. I suspect that the front-runners in the Democratic Party, and those who fund them (particularly those who fund them), are looking forward to what they can accomplish with warrantless searches and seizures, arbitrary arrest and imprisonment, and signing statements. I remember the time period shortly after 9/11 when everyone said that our priorities would change. That we would care more about things that matter and less about things that don't. Sadly, that period lasted about 4 months and then things like Paris Hilton and American Idol became the focus again. Sucks! Great observation Eric. Those most effected by 9/11, ones who lost family or friends, may have changed their perspectives - but the vast majority of Americans are back in their comfort zones...sadly. but the vast majority of Americans are back in their comfort zones...sadly.I do not think it is a vast majority. I believe a large segment is tuned in quite well. For the record, I despise most of the sickness in our pop culture. However, it seems to me, in the serious times we live, there is a greater need for escapism for some. For example, things that are the opposite of "serious". Perhaps the younger generation has witnessed the older seek out these diversions from the cold, hard reality of the these current times. Also, we do not have leadership in America that instills much pride in ourselves. We ,as a culture, are acting out the symptoms of poor self-esteem and we are becoming self-destructive. What have we taught them? A few choice quotes, which dance on and around the topic: "The annual cost of supplying basic education to children that currently don't have it is $8 billion. That's roughly what the world spends on weapons in four days, working toward that "peace on earth" theme, no doubt. Or to put a fine edge on it, less than half of what parents in the U.S. will spend on toys for their kids this year." -- Brock N. Meeks, MSNBC, 11/28/00 "In every country, we should be teaching our children the scientific method and the reasons for a Bill of Rights. With it comes a certain decency, humility and community spirit. In the demon-haunted world that we inhabit... When I clipped this, I was focusing on the last part of the clip; losing our Constitutional freedoms. There is a second, more important concern. How many of them are going to look back on the Bush Administration and the public reaction to their behavior and say, “How hard will it be to establish a more dictatorial government with us in control of everything? Look at the Bush Administration and how far he actually went dismantling the Constitution. And Bush was an idiot. If we avoid his mistakes, we might actually be able to succeed where he failed.” it is time to make the term ‘collaborator’ a part of our political vocabulary once again, and to make every politician afr... Less than a half-dozen years ago I commented, in one mailing list, that the Bush administrations' lying, cheating, stealing, corrupting, and manipulating tactics (including wiping their butts on the Constitution) were teaching the Democrats too many lessons on how to be successful at being dictatorial and destructive to our basic way of life. It might be too tempting for them, not to mention for other Republicans. Frankly, I think we need multiple political parties in this country. I like seeing how this works in other countries, where the alliances on issues are made up-front and in public view. |
