This probably makes sense.

It seems whomever you are talking to gets a little more interested in giving you advice if it appears you are actually listening, and not wasting their time.

Also, it makes them feel more of an expert if you treat them that way. I guess its an ego thing.

And let's face it, people like to give advice, right?
