The term Halloween is derived from Hallowe'en or Hallows Evening, the evening before All Hallows Day or also know as All Saints Day. All Saints Day was a holiday assigned by the Roman Catholic Church to pay tribute to Christian saints. It was originally observed on a different day, but was moved to November 1st by Pope Gregory III in an effort to offset the Pagan celebration of Samhain. This is not the first time the church has moved Christian celebrations to different days in an effort to disrupt the celebration of pagan holidays. Christmas was moved by the Catholic Church via the Council of Tours II from January 6th to December 25th to offset the Roman celebration of Sol Invictus' birt... Thanks you guys! I've been saying 'halloween' and 'trick or treat' all my life without ever knowing what it really meant or where it came from. |
