Good article about the different trains of thought on this issue

You'd enjoy Nancy Andreasen's excellent book The Creating Brain: The Neuroscience of Genius. She is a professional fiction writer who in mid-life became a neuroscientist, in part because of her fascination with how creative minds work. It's a very useful book.

She also theorizes about rest and the creative mind, suggesting that rest is the time in which these remote connections are achieved by sort of blowing up the connections that exist and re-building new ones linked in unconventional ways.
