Today an election is being held in my state where the incumbent Republican Governor is being challenged by a Democrat who has pledged to "follow the teachings of his creator," and put prayer back in schools. Maybe this is part of that trend. My fervent hope is that fundamentalists will lose interest in politics completely, and let us have our country back.

<P>The hundred-foot white cross atop the Immanuel Baptist Church in downtown Wichita, Kan., casts a shadow over a neighborhood of payday lenders, pawnbrokers and pornographic video stores. To its parishioners, this has long been the front line of the culture war. Immanuel has stood for Southern Baptist traditionalism for more than half a century.
