There isn't enough uranium to last. The way to go is to burn the radioactive waste in fast breeder reactors. It is estimated that all that waste could be burned up in 50 years. Why didn't fast-breeder technology catch on? It wasn't that the technology didn't work, it was that the price of uranium was so cheap that it rendered fast breeders uneconomic.

Concerning fast breeder, some countries, like Japan, India and France use this technology. But like all nuclear technologies, it's not without problems.

Concerning the clip itself, it is true that current technologies involving solar, wind, hydropower and biomass are not without problems, and so part of the solution will be to be more energy efficient. For exemple, we can transport goods by boat and train, not by truck or plane. We can use more public transport. Gadgets can be powered by alternative means (think of the $100 laptop).

Also, we must not forget that for many years, while oil was cheap, there was not a lot of research in alternative energy sources. That should change in the comming years.

I don't believe that fast breeder got beyond so-called experimental reactors, like the French Super-Phoenix and Dunray in Scotland. They have been closed down, so I presume research has stopped, too.
Totally agree that the only sure way to adapt to energy shortages is by a radical reduction in energy use. There is nothing wrong with muscle power. It is very healthy, too.

Time for everyone to start living more simply perhaps?
