In keeping with the image of the regressive South the Mayor of Birmingham, Alabama decided that the best way to fight a rising crime rate was to don biblical costumes and ask his invisible friend for help. Is it any wonder the rest of the nation views the South with scorn and ridicule? I live in the South and I hold that sad view too. But I do like the climate!

AtLib, my friend, I understand exactly how you feel. I do not know if you are originally from the south, but as a northerner who lived down there for almost 5 years many years ago, I felt totally lost and alienated. Some of it had to do with the kinds of attitudes and activities you describe. Melting pot? This type of crap does not melt into any pot I know of.

LOL. I should mention that as my moniker suggests, I am lucky to live in a large metropolitan city so the mind numbing ignorance is more diluted here. Sure it exists but then again we do see this all across the country. Now once you leave the safety of the big city and venture into the hinterland you take your chances. Pockets of sanity can be found. Maybe not enough to make a difference...yet! Hope springs eternal!

I was saddly born and raised in the southern states with a high IQ of 175 but saddly I was poor and have recieved a bad education even to southern standards. You think growing in the south is alienating? I'm afraid its much more than that it robs you of your entire being and causes you to regress into a primative state that is possibly lower the middle ages I am so glad I am out but I am certain that anyone can tell that the pain and damage is irrevesible. Take pity on me
