Some suggested maybe he should make similar jokes about his son Harry and one of the Obama girls and see how many people laugh.

Yes, the man is "perverted" and a sick ol' man.

I don't think Letterman is perverted, but i do think those comments cross the line.

I agree with egoldstein. Letterman isn't perverted and the jokes are wrong.

I do understand, too, that even at Letterman's level, he's the subject of a boss expecting job performance. At this time, there is tremendous pressure being put on him to pass Conan O'Brien's new Tonight Show in the ratings. Can you imagine a late night comic saying something extreme to generate water cooler buzz? What a concept!

Except that Letterman was not talking about the younger Palin but the 18-year old one, the one her Mommy dearest is so happy to exploit at every turn. Not that it makes it right, but Sarah doesn't really have a leg to stand on here.

At least Leterman is man enough to admit his mistake, as he did last night. Other "entertainers" not so much.

It doesn't matter what age they are!! It's sick. And if that's our culture's idea of "funny" and entertainment that explains a lot of other things.

I don't consider her exploiting her daughter. As a candidate she AND her family became instant objects of the media's focus. THEY brought them to the forefront. She tried to make the best of it and humorists and those demeaning themselves for ratings went with whatever they could....much of it which were lies and distortions.

You can not make excuses for this guy.

I am not making excuses for him. He apologized. Miss Palin chose to pared her pregnant daughter and mentally ill child in front of the cameras, again and again, and still does (Newsweek, Faux News, etc). So she does not have a leg to stand on. Way beyond the standard meet and greet family commercial or passing references to the kids in a picture or two.

Nothing sicker than a mother exploiting her children for political gain.

I think Palin brought all this on her family herself. Her daughter is 18 she's not a child she has a child.

As I said, all political candidates bring their children on the campaign trail. John Edwards comes to mind. If she had left the littlest one home, she would have been criticized for that.

And it wasn't Bristol, the 18 yr. old (though that doesn't matter)...it was Willow who was there at that game. Plus he had just said she was like a "slutty flight attendant". I would be highly offended with just that remark!! as should flight attendants.

Love how the left will jump to Dave's defense when he makes jokes about statutory rape. What is it with the left and their obsession with raping conservative women? Is it insecurity?

At least there is one democrat out there who will stand up for what is right.

@clairecmc Letterman jokes about Palin's daughter.Way over the line.If it were my daughters I'd be furious. He should seriously apologize.
@clairecmc is Sen. Claire McCaskill of Missouri

Not defending him, just stating a fact here n2. Unlike you, I can see that one wrong does not trump another. Just like that horrible story about the kid her daughters (the disabled child) and not hers. I never supported that in the slightest. And I am glad if backfired on those who spouted that line.

And jafla, Palin has gone way beyond bringing the family on the campaign trail. She has kept pushing the kids to the lamp light beyond the election cycle. If she gave a damn she would have tried to protect their privacy.

I for one would not have faulted her for leaving the kids at home, she is the politician, not them. My take is, keep kids away from politics, period. When they grow up they can make their own mind about who the vote for.

I can not imagine how thoroughly satisfied the Palin Derangement Syndrome people must be with this shot to the gut of their nemesis. Since this treatment is indefensible and because they revel in such abuse, they will have nothing to say. They are not brave enough to support Letterman for making them giggle.

Sarah Palin is a mother, a wife, a governor, an attractive woman and down to earth. That really creeps the liberals out. To them there is something obviously wrong with her. She is not elite. She makes lunch for her brood. She never looks harried. She always smiles. She is stuck on God. She must be plastic.

Poor libs, they just don’t dare like her. She is everything they fear. This har...

Later today, the rationalizations from the left will begin to ooze out. I predict this will be the most popular:

“It’s Palin’s fault for shamelessly using her children as political props.”

Men who feel the need to demean women do it to all women. They do not pick and choose. However Dave knows if he said it about Obama’s daughters he would be fired.

Surely you jest, rat. A real mother takes her children with her and how in heavens name could she possibly protect their privacy?? The children were/are practically stalked. They have no privacy at all. Gov. Palin is a public figure who attends public events and her family is with her and her husband. It's called "family" and doesn't end with public office.

The end for me. She would/will never do one thing right from the Left's point of view.

Second that. Also quite possibly the most ignorant comment I've read at Clipmarks and, wow, is that saying something.
