I have read that the so called holy lands were chosen by post WW2 politicians for the Jews to settle because it would be best if they controlled the region for the second coming. This belief obviously is still there and Dick'n'George's loonies want it as close to Nostadamus' prediction as possible.
I laugh at their need to return to the gas and dust from whence all life forms came.
No wonder there is an increased interest in other habitable planets. As the dolphins said, so long and thanks for the fish.

This is nothing new. Reagan's Secretary of the Interior, James Watt, was a dispensationalist who thought that it wasn't important to protect the environment because he believed the world would end soon. Speaking before Congress, he once said, "I do not know how many future generations we can count on before the Lord returns."
