doodleicious says: amazing...... I've often thought that home schooling would neglect the social aspect of growing up. But school ain't for sissies anymore. It's a tough world out there and I sure wouldn't want to do it all over again. Homeschooling has a lot to do with not wanting the indoctrination of "liberal ideology". It also has the positive aspects of using the day wisely (getting the school work done and then having the rest of the day for the rest of life), no need for children to wait for and ride the buses, avoiding the taunting hatefulness in many classrooms, the hormone hotbed of middle & high school, and children actually having a social life with others. The main reason for the anti-homeschooling movement is that for every child not in Public schools, they lose money. Homeschooling has a lot to do with not wanting the indoctrination of "liberal ideology".That is a small part, jatfla. Homeschooling is done out of love and the opportunity to do so. Sure, there are many reasons to homeschool and indoctrination is certainly an issue. For me the main incentive to home school is wanting the best possible education for my child. Oh my. This article is full of strange notions. Opponents of homeschooling stress the risks of under-socialisation of the children, and query the value of what is taught, since most homeschooler parents have never been trained in their subjects.I can testify that there are teachers in public schools that have never been trained in their subjects. Fortunately I learned how to learn and taught myself those subjects. If children's interaction with people of different races, different Will...I agree that homeschoolers (as a rule) receive a better education. Mousie...you pointed out some very important intentions and agenda of the current Educational climate. It wants our children to believe what *they* want them to know/believe...not necessarily share the same opinions and values of their parents. Nice points BNM. BNM, I'd like your input on how parents who choose to home school tackle the challenge of creating social skills. After all, we all have to live in the world and we have to deal with people on a regular basis. Some people are better at it than others and I think social IQ is actually very important. right on.....am glad to see i found a topic that struck a chord - i like it when that happens.... Debby, I do not think that social skills are at risk by homeschooling. There are all types of activities that provide opportunities for kids to interact with other kids. My cousins that were homeschooled participated in team sports, for example. Homeschooling also has group activities with other homeschooled kids in their city, like field trips, etc. I'm sure DizzyDezzi can offer much more insight into this. She homeschools her kids. Fair enough BNM In the meantime, here's a salute for all the overworked and unpaid teachers in our public school system: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=18-U079ZcZY&feature=related As bad as ... They do not teach mathematics, English, nature, science, civics, geography or history. In other words, they deliberately fail to train their graduates for a life of work and productivity. So these graduates have no choice but to cling to the coattails of ultra-Orthodox activists.Muslim madrasas education? No. These are extremist institutions, which do not even recognize the education systems run by Shas and United Torah Judaism and are unwilling even to hear about the Education Ministry's "core curriculum."Why? The fact is that 80% of ultra-Orthodox men do not work; instead, they live on government grants and stipends and the[b]... bnm is right, home schooled kids are socialized, but mostly within their social group. There is often very little exposure (that is sometimes the point) to the failures of democracy. (I considered it for my own children because of the drugs and crime in their public school, but decided against it.) Then the well educated and protected home schoolers go off to college, live in gated communities, and run our country, never having seen what reality is for so many. I am not intending to wipe a broad brush over the entire HS system, but there are flaws, just as there are in public schools. Makes you wonder why we have education systems. Maybe it is to provide jobs for those who couldn't gain employment elsewhere. And a pop for the headline. New Westminster has an excellent home schooling program. The parents have a rented space for group learning and they have field trips. Unfortunately to home school both parents cannot work outside the home. And these days in a lot of instances both parents have to work. yeah one of them don't do as i do.....do as i say sort of thingys The real purpose of the government's "free education" system--now legally "compulsory"--was Reconstruction after the so-called Civil War, in which it first began. That primary purpose should be kept in mind for those who delegate "education" (indoctrination) to the government. It is of government institution and serves as an involuntary juvenile detention and probation center (and feels like one) until graduation and release during this probation. It's purpose is to Unite all into one stream of general thinking (especially under federal funding). The socialization it drives and incorporates is "acceptance" of deviancy as well as radical social variations where "tolerance" is law,... |
