The REAL Napster
That's not all:

-Going to websites that promote 'free' coupons and bargains
-Not having a good firewall product installed, (MS firewall is crap face it)
-Not having a good anti-virus program to start with
-Not having your anti-virus subscriptions up to date
-Not having a good anti-spyware program installed (like webroot spysweeper)
-Having system restore turned on (its a bad idea, as spwware and virii like to hide there cause you can't touch em)
-Not having a good pop-up blocker
-Not using a REAL search engine(like Google)
-Not using McAfee site advisor

I can go on and on, but the point is: if you are not prepared and you do stupid things on the NET your going to get burned. PT barnum was right.

Hmm - Many of the above activities are safe if done correctly...

I don't run antivirus or firewall software on my computer, yet my computer is fast and spyware free. Here's how to stay safe in 4 easy steps.

1) run firefox - then you can go to any website you want and not worry.
2) Never open an attachment you weren't expecting, especially a .exe or .bat file. If possible, use a mail client that filters out all executable files. The Free and Open Source Thunderbird is great at this, and gmail is a great webmail alternative.
3) Research software before downloading. If you need an image editor, google "free image editor". Spyware-laden programs won't climb the popularity chart that is google....
