That's not all: -Going to websites that promote 'free' coupons and bargains -Not having a good firewall product installed, (MS firewall is crap face it) -Not having a good anti-virus program to start with -Not having your anti-virus subscriptions up to date -Not having a good anti-spyware program installed (like webroot spysweeper) -Having system restore turned on (its a bad idea, as spwware and virii like to hide there cause you can't touch em) -Not having a good pop-up blocker -Not using a REAL search engine(like Google) -Not using McAfee site advisor I can go on and on, but the point is: if you are not prepared and you do stupid things on the NET your going to get burned. I don't run antivirus or firewall software on my computer, yet my computer is fast and spyware free. Here's how to stay safe in 4 easy steps. 1) run firefox - then you can go to any website you want and not worry. 2) Never open an attachment you weren't expecting, especially a .exe or .bat file. If possible, use a mail client that filters out all executable files. The Free and Open Source Thunderbird is great at this, and gmail is a great webmail alternative. 3) Research software before downloading. If you need an image editor, google "free image editor". Spyware-laden programs won't climb the popularity chart that is google.... |
