I personally believe that the wide-spread interest and continuing growth of the Freecycling movement is directly related to this phenomenon.

My 2 pairs of Birkenstock sandals are 27 years old... I bought them in Toronto in 1980! I wear nothing else, except snow boots in the winter, and clodhopper track shoes when I ride my bike. They've been re-soled and recorked more times than I can remember.
