Just so nobody can say I only criticize Bush, I offer here a plan to immediately end the crisis with Iran.

Ahmadinejad is an aggressive, anti-Western president who is isolating Iran, much to the chagrin of the Iranians. The economy is weak, and it is getting harder for people to make a living, which is causing unrest.

On the other hand, his predecessor Khatami was a progressive, who wanted relations with the west, and had a good record on the economy.

I suggest that we use these factors in to our advantage in the following plan: (see comments bellow.)

If I were the President, I would...

Part I. The Thaw

1. Arrange for Georgetown University to invite Mohammad Khatami to lecture its students on Philosophy and International Dialog. While he is in Washington DC arrange a "secret" meeting, to talk with him about what sort of foreign aid he thinks could help salvage the Iranian economy. (He did a pretty good job of running it, so he should know best.) Let news of the meeting leak.

2. Two weeks later, invite Khatami back to DC for a nationally televised dialog between him and myself. Make the dialog strictly about philosophy and culture. Focus on commonalities between Iran and America, and areas for mutual improvement.

3. Follow this up by a...

II. Diplomacy

1. Invite Khatami back to plan official Bilateral talks.

2. Send a ranking diplomat to Iran to talk with Khatami, and send them "secretly" to talk with the Ayatolla Khameni. Specifically do not talk to Ahmadinejad, or anyone in his cabinet. Discuss a massive aid package, and the complete normalization of relations. (This would include negotiating positions on Israel and Iraq.)

3. Establish official ambassadors, but demand that Khatami represent Iran. Make this request to the Ayatolla, not to Ahmadinejad, totally ignore his government. The Ayatolla will probably take the deal and leave Ahmadinejad out in the cold.

4. Hold very public talks with Khatami and other Iranian repr...

III. The Pitch

1. We should offer:

- Normalized relations
- A favorable trade package
- Foreign Aid money
- International Support
- Respect of Islam in Iran
- Support for Iranian Democracy and Reformers

2. We should demand:

- Acknowledgment of Israel's right to exist
- End of connections with Terrorism
- Protection of Christian, Jewish, Baha'i, Zoroastrian, Sunni and Kurdish minorities
- Democratic reforms advocated by Khatami
- End to aggressive military projects, such as development of nuclear weapons.
- Support for further initiatives in the Middle East

3. We close the deal with...

- An offer to support a true Palestinian nation, as a full fledged member of the International commun...

Of course! Beautiful. Khatami wanted something like this years ago, and Bush wouldn't do it.

Yeah, I wonder if Bush ever thinks back to the days of Khatami, back when he was calling reformers and progressives "evil" and wishes he had Khatami back instead of Ahmadinejad? And then I wonder if he ever wonders why it was that Khatami's movement got steam-rolled by a jingoistic firebrand?

Or maybe there is some bizarre kinship among petty demagogues, and in Ahmadinejad Bush sees himself? More likely, Bush loathes Ahmadinejad specifically for all the traits they both share.

(You ever seen that? When somebody who does something annoying meets someone who does the exact same thing and just totally can't stand it? Probably because it makes them feel guilty...)

By the way, this clip, and my proposed plan of action, is a response to a charming little dialog I had with Colorado Right, on my clip Symbiosis Between Bush and Ahmadinejad.

Highlights included Colorado Right insisting that they Iranians enjoy murdering their own children, and me challenging Colorado Right to explain why he was ideologically any different from an Islamic Terrorist.

However, I felt a little guilty about the glib tone of the whole thing and so decided to solve the problem.

I don't work for the Foreign Service. I want to, but not under Bush, under a president who can't listen to advice. I won't work in a Neo-Conservative echo chamber crying for war.

So, if you like this pl...
