The Monomyth is the term that noted mythologist Joseph Campbell uses to describe the Hero's Journey. The Matrix is an example. This great storytelling formula follows the journey of someone going on a quest, experiencing a road of trials, facing evil and failing, having a dark night of the soul/crisis of faith, and ultimately triumphing over evil.
