This case promises to be very interesting!
If a chimpanzee can be declared a person, then there's nothing in the way of a person becoming an ape--and I'm not just talking about a retroactive status applied to ex-husbands. In fact, I predict a surge in trans-specied people, who will eagerly go over to the side of the chimps.
This bit is just BEGGING for me to make a GWB joke...but I won't.

I'm not sure giving human rights to a chimps would be doing them much of a favor. It seems animals in a zoo generally do a lot better than many people in war zones and third world countries.
Why is the distinction so important? We don't seem to be as special as we once thought we were. We should have a respect for life in general and stop pretending that things should have rights at our discretion. For a start, the chimps evolved first, so they have seniority. Maybe giving the chimps the right to vote, would make elections fairer. Election campaigns are a mystery to most people, Chimps should have no trouble.(I couldn't resist bringing politics in, but you have to give the chimps some credi...

Hey they are the closest relitives we have in the animal kingdom. Although we seem to have trouble giving human beings the rights they are entitled too.
