In the 50s and 60s, he was the man behind Miles Davis and cool bop. Then it was Clifford Brown and hard bop. After that, it was free jazz. He was the drummer on the legendary Massey Hall performance by The Quintet, made up of Charlie Parker, Charles Mingus, Bud Powell and Dizzy Gillespie (a CD I'm listening to as I write this) - now that's an all-star lineup. He was also a major civil rights leader, recording <I>We Insist! Max Roach's Freedom Now Suite</I> on the 100th anniversary of the Emancipation Proclamation.
