I was expressing amazement at the level of governmental organization and international control going into preventing this year's World Cup from blowing up. Maybe precautions are especially high because, as I understand, many British fans feel like this year could be "the one" for them... Story time... I went to visit my Aussie friends living in London 2 years ago. The first night I was there we went to a local bar where about a hundred folks were gathered to watch England play Portugal in the European Championship. Towards the end of the game, after a big play, we heard some people yelling at each other behind us, then they started shoving and getting rowdy. The instigators were basically pushed out of the bar and we all thought that was the end of it, but then a couple of seconds later they ran back to the entrance and started pelting empty beer bottles into the bar. We all ducked underneath the table -- they just kept flying in all over the place. It was insane. About ... Yea, this is ridiculous behaviour over a game. Wow! Come on now, y'all know that soccer is the biggest religion in Europe! As such, when its followers experience rapture, it is intense.  |
