Karzdan says: Here they go again, trying to claim Atheism is a religion. Building up their strawman arguments. Spouting false assumptions. And just generally getting it all wrong. Better some few do than the multitude of gooses that have royal telephone to god like Sarah.Imagine a world full of nutters pressing red buttons because god told them too,,isnt it enough with fundamentalist blowing themselves up so they can go to paradise. what about poor burned maimed survivors of Bali Holiday.?? Semantics It's rather funny, you know. Most Atheists claim to have a scientific basis for their disbelief, and yet their agenda, to prove the non-existence of God is a blatant violation of proper Scientific Method. That, and Rabid Atheist just make me giggle. I agree that trying to prove the non-existence of any god would be foolish, but I defy you to name any prominent atheist (or atheist clipper for that matter) who has attempted to do so. It is not up to the person who doesn't believe outlandish claims to prove them wrong, it is up to the person making the claim to prove it. I feel no need to prove the non-existence of unicorns, fairies or the little green men that my sister claims live under her bed, and I'm sure Christians don't feel the need to prove the non-existence of Thor, Neptune, The Flying Spaghetti Monster or Bertrand Russell's teapot. As for "rabid atheists"....... try [url=/clipmark/12E56756-A3A6-41C4-B2D5-9D83DBF59BDD/]this[/url... Oh, there are most certainly militant atheists out there. I found a whole forum of them, and ended up banned because I kept blithely defusing their passionate tirades about there not being a God. There are plenty of atheists out there who think that it's their duty to "convert the world" What do you call a bible-thumper that doesn't have a bible to thump? I didn't claim that there aren't atheists who think it important to challenge religion and the religious. You were talking about attempts at proof, which is different than argument and debate. Please see the link in my previous comment, where the the silly use of the term "militant" in this context is looked at. Calling Dawkins a militant atheist is as silly as calling the pope a militant catholic or Obama a militant Democrat. An attempt to demonise. What do you call a bible-thumper that doesn't have a bible to thump? An atheist @chedare - good point. I suppose this thread might be important in other nations than my own. One of the really good ideas that USA Americans are raised with is freedom of speech and freedom of religion. I wouldn't care a whit if someone was an atheist, a pagan, a worshiper of trees or streams, an agnostic, or a member of any of the major religions or their sects. If you haven't noticed by now, people have different beliefs. What concern is it to you? What concern is it to you?It only concerns me, when said followers tries to enact laws based of thier beliefs, despite it being irrational to do so. (See all the attempts to limit the rights of Homosexuals by 'Christians'. I thought the US was the land of the free. Not a Christian theocracy.) Keep your faith, believe in what ever imaginary friend you want. Just keep it out of my life. It's a personal matter, and needs to stay that way. Exactly. As they say "If you don't pray in my school, I won't think in your church" A Christian spreads his faith by example, not by proclamation. These people trying to enact "Christian" laws and social mores are not acting Christian. However, Atheism is, indeed, a religion. It's a steadfast belief on metaphysical issues, based on data that is relevant to you. If you want to be free of any kind of system of faith, I recommend Agnostism. Admitting that you don't know the truth about metaphysical issues, and that it may never be known is certainly the most open-minded choice. Me? I have no such confusion, though. I've seen and experienced too much to deny Christianity myself. When I apply the term atheist to myself I mean that I do not believe in any god. This is not the same as me saying I believe in the non-existence of any god. Call that agnosticism if you want - I really don't mind what label I carry. My atheism is most certainly not a religion. If it wasn't for the influence that religion has over all our lives it would be as irrelevant and uninteresting to me as the existence or not of fairies etc and less interesting than the existence or not of UFOs. Hey, all I want is some evidence. Seen none. None that your limited perceptions can show, true Perhaps. Makes no difference either way. Well, it does. It just depends on how open-minded you want to be. I am very open-minded. I just need evidence before I believe outlandish claims. Ah, but do you need evidence, or "evidence-that-fits-within-the-perception-limits-of-current-science"? Is there a difference? Oh, absolutely. Aha - the nub of the issue. I agree that of course we don't know everything yet. You say "we are learning new things everyday", well it is through science that we learn these new things - not religion. I delight in the wonder and mystery of our universe, but I am happy to allow the application, growth and development of science answer and/or investigate those unknowns, that mystery. I don't feel the need to fill the gaps with a supernatural being. Anyway darkeforce, thanks for the chat. I hope it's not too rude for me to bring it to a close. I think it unlikely that we are going to agree on this, although I think (from your clips and comments generally) that there is a lot we would agree on... @Karzdan -- I agree with you. My point was about letting everyone believe in any way they want. Of course that doesn't mean their beliefs can allow them to murder people -- nor does it mean they can impose their religion on me. @JohnWaterman & others. Religious (or non-religious) freedom is, to me, really where it's at. It's certainly better than religious wars. Christianity, especially, has the idea that it should go around converting everyone. But you don't have Hindus or Buddhist or folks from the Japanese religion of Shinto come knocking on your door like Mormons. That's just the way it is. I was born and raised and believed in Christ. That was okay and had it's good points. The... @ citizenbfk,,Hi my sense of moral injustice is outraged when I see in Indian state of Orrissa that Hindu,s are raping nuns and killing and burning Christian homes while the Police stand by.The federal Government says states responsible for law and order.I understand people are brought up in beliefs but surely we have an inborn instinct of what is fair and decent.Myself like John Waterman don't try and force our beliefs on others. But I see little children playing sharing in the sandpit( multiracial) together before they grow up to take on their parents beliefs in most cases. The consequences are so repetitive in history of things like currently in Orrissa are product of clashes of religious ... @chedare I did say, above, "Of course that doesn't mean their beliefs can allow them to murder people -- (nor does it mean they can impose their religion on me.)" I'm glad to hear that "your sense of moral injustice" is also outraged," by hate, violence, murder. We agree. Your point, also, about "children playing sharing in the sandpit" without any prejudices of race or religion is also a good one and always nice to see. It does show how racist and religious prejudice is really a learned reality, not so much an inborn trait. (although some animal studies show that an animal that is 'different,' or weaker from others in his group will often get picked on -- the so-called 'pecking order."... "Calling Atheism a religion is like calling bald a hair color." -Don Hirschberg So we can add him to the list of the ignorant. If Atheists don't want to be called a religion, then they should stop acting like religious people. Knock of the evangelism. In other words, someone stating belief in God is not a mandate for you to "correct" them. That is what makes Atheism a religion. |
