The Glass-Steagall was GOVERNMENT REGULATION that was put into place after the last massive orgy of greed that screwed the country over, and it was the Republicans who fought hard for years. Yeah, Clinton signed it. And he was one of the most corporatist/Republican-in-drag Democrats ever when it came to stuff like this.

The Randians like Alan Greenspan still believe that if the government would just "get out of the way and let the Market sort things out" everything would be fine.

Except for the fact that the Myth of the Rational Market is exactly that: a myth. Something that people believe and which gives them meaning and a framework, but which doesn't have a basis in reality.

So given that, why SHOULD we trust in an absolutely free market without government oversight? It seems we've been down this road before, leading up to 1929.

Also, this particular economic system that has created our current "Global Economy" essentially panders to the worst in human nature (and I'm not real sure sometimes just how good our "best" is). Sort of like saying that you just let the "meanest S.O.B.'s in the Valley", whose driving philosophy is "Greed Is Good", duke it out with everybody else's lives and the last one standing will be the original Mr. Wonderful. It's unlikely, as far as I can figure. The new monarchy is Corporatocracy and needs to be fought tooth and nail. Our U.S. government is still capable of responding to the people and there are still some true public servants in it (as many as "We the People" will allow, anyway) and...
