It turns out the "fake" accusation were due to a crater that appeared in the China photo's that were not in old NASA photos. Also a crater that existed in the old NASA photo had moved. This of course raised questions and concern. Turns out that when the images are taken they are taken as a complete set that need to be put back together in a correct mosaic pattern. One edge of the images had been offset in correctly and then someone tried to smooth the offset which created artifacts. A complete explanation can be found at The Planetary Society |
