* They are honest with themselves * They resist manipulation * They overcome confusion * They ask questions * They base judgments on evidence * They look for connections between subjects * They are intellectually independent Sounds like a darn good start! I wish more people could embrace these; even teach it in school. This is really only a list of platitudes. Let me show what really goes unsaid here: * They are honest with themselves - only when others agree with them. * They resist manipulation - because they themselves know very well the tricks with which they use to "implement" their criticisms. * They overcome confusion - only because they have mastered the art of bamboozle. (e.g. you are a well-known astrophysicist and you use this "fame" into bamboozling the hoi polloi about religion even though you know squat about it.) * They ask questions - to divert attention from their own questionable assumptions. * They base judgments on evidence - which they pick and ch... Wow someone has some anger against intellectuals. I agree with every point on the original list if taken as is. I do have one to add though. *They are willing to admit when they are wrong, in part or entirety, and modify their position accordingly. This list is what we should all aim for. It is doubtful that any of us will actually embody all of these qualities but it is fun to try. (= What's CQ? I'm curious too AcesLucky! |
