bignosemousie says: Essay about nursing a friend's baby. Um, I'm a nursing mother and the last thing I would ever do is offer to swap babies. I'm a very liberal minded nursing mother. Not militant in my approach but in my personal belief but NO WAY, would I. Breast milk changes as the baby grows and needs change. I nursed both of mine (CAN'T BEAT THE CONVENIENCE). Benefits outweighed any reason not to (even sore nipples!) "Wet nurses" were common looooong time ago. I would've done it in emergency situation, but as for just to do it, I don't think so. I wouldn't want my babies to bond with another mother. btw, I had to stop "cold turkey" when I had emergency surgery. That was a nightmare for both of us! I don't think I'd have a problem nursing another baby, but I'm not sure I'd want another woman nursing my baby. Mostly for the reasons the author mentions. I wonder how they screen the milk donated to milk banks. Maybe Babyvan (I think that's right) would know. I really enjoyed nursing. Dorine, I weaned my daughter right before I had emergency surgery. I was soooo lucky. I can't imagine what cold turkey was like for you or your baby. That was a crappy deal for both of you. With my oldest she was 2 and I had just found out I was pregnant (miscarriage) but I just looked at her and told her they were broken. She only asked twice and that was it. It was a bigger issue for me than it was for her. It was hard on both of us. (My daughter is now 17!) It took 2 whole weeks for the milk to go away, but the agonizing pain I'll never forget. (My surgery was for ectopic pregnancy--proof nursing is not a contraceptive.) |
