How oddly coincidental, my one eye is on this picture and the other on my TV which is showing a documentary on the Moghul Empire of India.

It, rather a copy of it, hangs on my wall.

Mick, tell me, as a matter of interest, what is it about this particular piece of art that appeals to you so specifically. I think it's a lovely picture, but I'm always interested in seeing art through other people's eyes? Why is it your favourite painting?

Michelle. Difficult question to answer. I like the composition of it, the way the eye is lead from the inhospitable background to the vibrant colours of the riders and their horses. There’s a hint of civilisation too, notice the road they are riding along. Looking at it one can almost imagine being in the Punjab itself, watching these warrior princes riding by on their fine horses. (The title also begs the question: If these are the three younger sons of the Shah Jehan, how many did he have?)
I bought it at least 30 years ago from Athena - don't know if you had them in SA - they introduced art to the public at large that could until then be seen perhaps only in museums and private collection...

I now see it differently. I'm always interested in art through other people's eyes as it gives me a whole new vision. It's another opinion, another interpretation, another person's insight. Thank you.

I wish we had more art discussion on Clipmarks. I'm not sure if I have a favorite artist, but I did see the Monet exhibit in Dallas many years ago and I really liked seeing an artist's work in a collection. I like art that moves me, but I guess most everyone feels that way.

That is exactly right, much as we like other things; they have to stir our emotions in some way for them to appeal and it’s not always easy to put into words what that appeal is. For example, I’ve always liked this painting but never really thought about why, so I had to think really hard in order to answer Michelle’s question, and thought is good exercise. (Perhaps we’ll have to inaugurate a Clipmarks Art Club.)

I think CM Art Club is a splendid idea!

I'm up for it! We'll have to test the water and find out who is interested. Not quite sure how we go about that.

I'm up for it. There are so many people on Clipmarks who appear to enjoy art and I'm sure have so much knowledge and insight to impart.

I know Skwirl likes art, his art collection on CM is huge.

I'm just off out for the weekend - it's Saturday night folks. We'll have to perhaps swap to email over the weekend and discuss it further. It's been quite an exciting afternoon after all that! Mick
