I wonder what that argument would look like when applied to guns and the NRA's stance that gun control (not elimination-just control) is bad.

Say that we disarm half of the police force to control firearms, and ask them to dodge the bullets being fired at them while they protect us instead of returning fire, chances are they won't be able to move that fast. And chances are that neither will the people they are trying to protect. The death toll increases, even though fewer people have firearms.

Mileage improvements should not come at the cost of being dead.

that's silly where in the argument has anyone brought up disarming the police force? Maybe we could address instead the loose guns, those used to commit crime, those accidentally shot which kill children, those used by psychopaths and murderers. What about we torture them before they shoot, then take their gun away? Would the death tolls drop in this country?

Seems more like people just need to learn how drive, then, rather than sticking to the idea that we should just happily chug along at full speed til the gas runs out. I've long been in favor of tougher requirements for driver's licenses. There are a lot of people out there that simply don't belong on the road.

Not to mention the great leap in logic that higher mileage can only come from making cars lighter. The same materials engineering that goes into reducing weight also makes strides in reducing friction.
