The petroleum produced by the Alberta Oilsands requires energy-intensive and extremely polluting processing just to reclaim the crude oil, and the mining process is an environmental disaster. Add to that the fact that the petroleum is "Sour Crude" (as opposed to the "Sweet, Light Crude" that's preferred), which produces many more pollutants upon refining.

If you're after petroleum, there really isn't any way worse to get it than this.

into the United States, a network of environmental and Native American

in a San Francisco court on Thursday, accusing President Barack Obama's
administration of significantly accelerating the importation of "dirty

Citing the administration's push to promote clean energy and reduce
greenhouse gas emissions, Ms. Burt said the new pipeline infrastructure
will "lock in" American consumption of bitumen for another fifty years.
