egoldstein says: I have received a number of messages recently about clipmarks becoming a "news" site. I've heard some good and bad potential implications of this. I have posted my thoughts on the matter on our blog and wanted to share them with you all here. Would love to hear your thoughts. I just hope ClipMarks Doesn't lose it's bookmarkability. Sometimes News is worthy of bookmarking, often times it is redundant or 'Not Really News' Real 'NEWS' is informative and action spurring. Terry Schivo was murdered because of the news coverage. Bush is driven from the news coverage and Newscasters have the power to pursue their personal agendas and get action from the bias they slant. Sometimes I just want 'Just the facts, man'. You don't get that with the news and you don't get that at Clipmarks. Sometimes those opinions are good, sometimes bad. Everytime they bias the facts to slant the direction the commenter wishes. Once the idea is put in its hard to unthink it. Even if in total ... When Reading a news story think about this: 1. Is this really NEWS? 2. Is this because the news corporation needs to generate ratings? 3. Why is this a story? 4. How does this affect me? 5. How much of this is opinion? Why is it: *That a person who goes to work, pays bills, taxes and provides for their family is not news? *The person who does their job correctly is not news? *Corporations that treat their employees well is not news? *Countries that treat their people well is not news? (Sweden, Norway, Iceland- Ever see them in the NEWS?) Journalism is a proffesion that rewards invasion of privacy. News is rude, insensitive to the individual and distorts the facts. It invades lives and changes them forever. To me, public Clipmarks is kind of a way station between being a passive consumer of online content and actively generating online content. I don't want to be responsible for running a blog and jockeying for status in the "blogosphere", but I like the give-and-take among the community--it is much easier to get an audience in Clipmarks than it would be starting a blog from scratch. As for this issue of news, I'm sympathetic towards those who don't like the news-focus of clipmarks. I mean, if public Clipmarks became dominated by sports talk I'd probably not enjoy it as much as I do now. But Eric said it in his response to skwirlinator's clipmark--if you don't like the focus of public cli... jklugman, that's nice. Me too I like the idea of interlinking where the best information is more active, and so should be highlighted. I just wish there was a better search here, Using 'search this site? with Google didn't give much and I find people temd to minimize the use of Tags even if it's the only way of finding a clip.. we're going to introduce community tagging real soon. i expect that to help a lot. I got real tired of all the negativity. Most television news has a nightly routine format. So I know what time to tune in for what I want to get out of the program that evening and then tune it back out. I enjoy Clipmarks for the variety of reports. Those that spawn conversation and those that encourage interes... To be honnest, I never really used Clipmarks as a "bookmarking" tool. I have yet to do a single private clip, or create a single folder other than "General". I never come back to my old clips for other reasons than to check if I got any new interesting comments. I use it only as a news tool. But not only news. Or Web2.0 news, in a way. The nice suff about it is to able to comment the news (or any other web information) personally, i have been using the same way as Guillaume. This honestly isn't what i expected, but it is how it's been for me. I do want to make it clear that I define "news" as anything on the web. The web is a digital representation of the world (and then some). It's all news as far as i'm concerned. I also must say that i relate bookchick's statement: What CM does for me is offer me the commraderie of a community ofEver since the site started to fill up with interesting clipmarks i haven't read a newspaper or magazine ... I find it hard to watch or read the news in traditional media anymore. Mostly because of the speed and variety the web provides. My personal homepage has such a wide mix of feeds and is updated constantly(via CM, Digg, etc) that by the time they show up on tv they are old stories. I have used Clipmarks mostly as a researching tool and to follow web 2.0 news. When I read a normal paper, I constantly feel the uge to write my point about the article now, or to show it to people to know what they thik aout it This is great! Such wonderful feedback! In clipping, I try to make my public ClipMarks: - Introduce an interesting site or idea - Relay wisdom to the masses - Inform about 'NEW' technology or advancements - Entertain or Make us laugh (You must laugh everyday!) - Share my interests - Enlightenment - Yes, Talk about current world events It's all news, NEWS = North, East, West, South; at least thats what I was told in school. My father said "Never discuss Politics or Religion" I understand why; Politics and religion are very personal issues inwhich everyones opinion is right, to them. Discussions usually turn into arguments and that usually leaves at least one party defeated for their beliefs.... swiril, what an excellent followup. You reasons and conclusions are also noble and honest. You got it right about "right clip goldstein" - his attitude drives our company, and our focus has been and will be on the user experience. As senior web eveloper here, I sure am pleased by the dually developing aspects and uses for clipmarks. I myslef am a both sides of the coins type of guy, Clipping privately or publically, news or bokmarks, commenting or quietly, the information you are now able to consume and interact with on our site is testatment of its sucess. And having closure to goal oriented discussions like these, ends the night quite nicely. Thanks again swiril man. No problem, Honesty is easy, Blowing smoke is whats hard. I am aware that ClipMarks is evolving and its because of you and your team's attitude on change that makes it work. Keep up the good work- us USERS appreciate it! Some Ideas: * Clip of the week, month or year * Clip contests- Best humor clip, best NEWS clip, Best...Clip * Community Folders * Community Tags * Clip Polls * ClipGames * Clip Ratings Skwirlinator...what can i say other than thank you! What you wrote sure means a lot to me. I'm going to go show it to my wife...be cool if she knew all that about me I find clipmarks an incredibly useful medium. The volume, quality and sheer diversity of information is wonderful, and should realized for the asset it has become. However, I don't know that I would classify this information as "news." For me, "news" is (or at least should be) the presentation of factual information with little or no personal bias. While I'm sure it is possible for clipmarks information to fall into this category, I'm almost positive most of the clips have a somewhat editorial nature to them. To summarize. Clipmarks is the organicly dynamic information upon which humanity is nurtured. But not news (at least for my own personal definition of news.) "Clipmarks is the organically dynamic information upon which humanity is nurtured." What a great definition knslyr. You should put that in the "Why I Use Clipmarks" section in your profile. I think that competitions, best of's, and etc, are not a good idea. I don't particularly like those elements that are already in place, like "top clippers". Aside from being impossible to figure, it really only appeals to a certain type of person, a person who will go to lengths to rise in the rankings. It also has a clique-forming nature, as do the other things that Skwirly proposed. I think you'll run the risk of creating a more closed environment that will narrow appeal to new users. Of course all this is subjective. Some prizes: A new car a new house a small country world rule fuzzy little models of the animal kingdom stuffed with more fuzzy stuff a long drink of cool water a short walk on a long pier 27 8x10 color glossy pictures with arrows and a paragraph on the back Kilroy was here stamp A gallon(litre) of MoosePiss one infected splinter removed-all expenses paid a little gold star by your name funny stuff, Skwirly. I agree, I would not mind if the "Top Clippers" and "Hot Clippers" lists were done away with. It's not a big deal however. If by community tags and community folders skwirlinator meant being ab... I was thinking community folders for search purposes adamc said:Thank you. And done! eek... a failed BBCode execution... my apologies It would be cool to be able to build custom ClipBoards to create custom ClipRolls. We should be able to remove Clips from our clipboard. Absolutely. Internally we've been referring to your idea of "custom Cliproll" as a "mix" - it is definitely needed and will be built. I am pretty sure that Clipmarks will soon set (or effect) the trends of Web and definitely is one of the strongest candidates for "Best Web 2.0 Application", "Best Community Tool". It has already deserved it. Man, this thing is evolving fast, like a living organism! I told to rmowery on one of our conversations: it's like having dozens of friends and colleagues vo... Invictus, couldn't agree more.. i think your description, use and passion for clipmarks is right on with mine. It's really an amazing community...go clipmarks I have ClipMarks: On my Google Start Page In Googe Reader In my SharpReader in my Yahoo 360 in CoolSciFi at work on the laptop in every browser that supports it (2 out of 6 I use) -Reminds me: *I find myself copying URLs from opera, netscape, mozilla and MSN to firefox so I can ClipMark stuff. *I keep the ClipMark Navigator open in IE. It's the only thing besides updates that I use IE for. * I WANT CLIPMARKS ON EVERY BROWSER * I WANT CLIPMARKS AS A DESKTOP WIDGET SO I CAN CLIP PARTS OF NON-BROWSER STUFF * I want my feet to stop hurting- - - Sorry, got carried away there for a minute Quick Windows tip: once you configure Automatic Updates to your liking in the Security control panel, you can stop using or remove IE from your system and updates will continue to work through the little tray alert. Thanks for the tip, I'll keep IE for now tho- Too many favorites and I use it to test page displays Favs are easily imported, and with the view-in-IE extension, IE page display testing is easy. |
