When you listen to the likes of Glenn Beck, Hannity, Limbaugh, Dennis Prager, Phil Valentine, Michael Smirkonish, Dave Glover, Liddy, William Bennett, and others you do not hear hate rhetoric. You hear rational, intellectual, heartfelt commentary and the people accross the country are included in the dialogue. That is what they hate. They thrive on divisiveness. The internet is not. The internet is place where you have to wade through 80% garbage to get to 20% good. However, I think that will change as the Internet becomes more ubiquitous in the lives of everyone.

In my opinion, Limbaugh and Hannity are a major reason for this tone becoming so widespread.

He is in fact probably the most bitter, divisive and untruthful person in ALL of media. His tactics, rhetoric and attitude are sexactly opposite of what you see in talk radio.
You describe what actually occurred on Air America. That is why they failed. Americans would not listen to talk radio if it were as you described it.
