Can everyone say, authoritarian regime? What makes the NY Times or anyone else in the world think that China would change just for the Olympics? because the world-wide press is watching? One of NBC's commentators mentioned that they had been briefed by the State Dept that their hotel rooms were bugged, they would probably be followed & photographed, phone calls, emails, etc. would be monitored --- I just assume that any Chinese who step out of line--will be treated the same or worse than usual, regardless of age. I think it does good to bring forth injustices to the reading public via any forum, and the light shines on China right now because of the Olympics. China has a history of harsh treatment of people who don't agree with them. The Olympics has only forced them to hide this mistreatment it's still there and I pity the Chinese population once the Olympic spotlight goes out. It puts me in mind of the case Kelo v. City of New London, 545 U.S. 469 (2005). Add to that all the detention camps that KBR-Halliburton are building around the country "just in case". What do you expect from a corrupt oligarchy? |
