egoldstein says: I strongly recommend reading the entire article. While it's hard to imagine his prediction coming true; given that our banks have become dependent on the government for survival and the government seems dependent on China for survival, it doesn't seem impossible. Further, this idea can't be taken lightly given the tense, extremely divisive nature of U.S. politics (look at the uproar between the different factions in the auto bailout as an example). FYI...I found this article via this clip originally posted by sunstreak 509. Wanted to clip a particular part of the article - that's why i posted another clip. Sadly the possibility is real, but I doubt it will happen as early as 2010. I expect low grade civil war and unrest somewhere between 2025 to 2050 as the current American economic model fails due to exhaustion. Mr. Panarin posits, in brief, that mass immigration, economic decline, and moral degradation will trigger a civil war next fall and the collapse of the dollar. This guy is just repackaging the biases and prejudices of Russian elites (xenophobia, nationalist chauvinism, puritanism) and he gets accolades from other Russian intellectuals. Similar things happen with intellectuals in the US. It does not take a genius to know the US is in trouble, but this guy probably knows as much about the US as American policymakers know about the Middle East. I think many a prognosticator has been led astray by the U.S. I think that has a lot to do with how random and seemingly rudderless democratic systems can seem to those who's governmental inclination is stability and "social harmony". There are dangers though from some reactionary elements as the nation becomes more diverse. The crisis we're in now is overstated - now is a good time to invest in America. Most of what we will see happen will happen b/f 2012. All control has been lost or started on purpose. Two words - Compound Interest. By definition, at some point (2001) that more than half the country was living off of interest and the other half hand to mouth. Compassionte conservatism is gone to as Reagan would say the trash heap of history. George W Bush - gut reaction, fisrt thousand words/ compassion comes not to mind. Stalin. Gut reaction. GW Bush was incompetent and led astray by incompetents (See recent Krugman article). This incompetents was allowed to happen and continue due to the warping of normalcy as a result of the 9/11 attacks. In effect, the terrorists won due to how their efforts were leveraged to keep America fearful and misguided. Obama was a major loss to the terrorists but it will require a lot of work on our part to keep the offensive. This is bizarre. My daughter and I were just talking yesterday about the demise of the Soviet Union and how it is easy to think that it could never happen to the U.S. |
