jklugman says: The conservative London Times writes “But why, we ask, do Americans continue to tolerate gun laws and a culture that seems to condemn thousands of innocents to death every year, when presumably, tougher restrictions, such as those in force in European countries, could at least reduce the number?” Where there are freedoms in a society, there will be people that abuse those freedoms. We could save even more lives by reducing the speed limit to 5mph. n2 is on full throttle sarcasm high-way, everyone seems to be going the wrong way, right? Hey, we have speed limits and seat belt laws, so you would think 90+ MPH crashes where the passenger isn't wearing the seatbelt wouldn't happen, right? Gun laws are like that, they only restrict those inclined to obey the laws. POPPED for above comment. Actually, n2sooners, that is not a great example because research does show in fact that increases in the speed limit result in greater auto fatalities. Speed limits do work: Farmer, CM, RA Retting, and AK Lund. 1999. "Changes in motor vehicle occupant fatalities after repeal of the national maximum speed limit." My jury is out on gun control but above example seems silly to me. For example, as a citizen who owns no car, do I need to now be afraid of people with cars who may be out there trying to kill me by crashing their cars on me while I walk? Guns have two purpose: they either help you kill or they help you defend. Cars have one purpose: you drive to make your life convenient. Both entities needs human to operate. There are probably zero examples of people using cars to take revenge then there are for people using guns to take revenge. Open gun policy means I must own a gun whether I'd like to or not. What if I don't want to own a gun in a society full of gun carrying people? I would hav... The above debate sounds like those who grew up East of the Mississippi and those who grew up West of the Mississippi. Excepting California, people who live West of the Mississippi can't imagine not having the right to own a gun, but its the same with speed limits. People West of the Mississippi think 55 mph is a joke! We'd never be able to get anywhere, just because of the distances we first have to travel to get to an interstate to go someplace or get to an airport. People who've lived their lives on the East or West coast have no frame of reference for what the middle of the country thinks or how we live! Here's what Yahoo Malyasia people are saying about it: http://malaysia.answers.yahoo.com/question/index?qid=20070417194857AAd5MyO The majority of Americans seem oblivious or indifferent to how they are perceived on a global scale There are probably zero examples of people using cars to take revengeYou mean like that guy (I believe it was a cab driver) who ran down two students after they got out of his car? Fact is, cars kill more people than guns. The criminal use of cars kills more people than the criminal use of guns. And the two largest mass murders in the US were done with vehicles, not guns. I live in South Africa, a country that has the highest murder, rape and highjacking statistics in the world. Our gun ownership laws are much tighter than those in the USA. But, people are still being murdered, and by a variety of weapons. My point is, where there is an evil will, there will be an evil way. If it's not a gun, it will be another weapon. Thus, in a gun-saturated country like the USA you are still statistically safer than we are, where legal guns are (supposedly) strictly controlled. Guns don't kill people, people kill people! POPPED- for the most intelligent response I have seen on Clipmarks to DATE. Not only is it intelligent, but it is TRUE! It all boils down to Cho is responsible and no one or nothing else. Everyone can wring their hands and oh my, oh my, what should we do, but in the end, the person Cho did it. great clip. should serve as great reference and support on my most popular entry =) Guns don't kill people, people kill people!Guns kill people. A gun is designed to kill. And people pull the triggers. I am so sick of people using the arguement that guns don't have anything to do with it. If guns were used to plant flowers, stir chocolate chip cookie mix, or write a poem, then you'd have a leg to stand on in my book. The ready availablity of guns contributed to this tradgedy and no amount of save our guns rhetoric can change that. Guns give you an instant solution to hurt someone without thinking about it. It takes a second to pull the trigger from afar. There will always be other methods to kill people as those who live in Iraq, Israel and Palestine ... The problem isn't about guns. It's about deranged mentally unstable (and documented) people like Cho who had a vendetta against the world. The gun is an inanimate object, and CANNOT kill people by itself. It needs someone to pick it up, load it with bullets and pull the trigger. And like I said before, what if Cho had made a home made flame thrower , went in chained the doors and set everyone on fire? People would be screaming about the evils of fire, and that it should be banned. If only people would think about the real problem, instead of looking for a quick fix. Cho was evil, (as most killers are) Maybe you should worry more about banning evil people than objects. The majority of Americans seem oblivious or indifferent to how they are perceived on a global scaleProud to be in that majority. Piling on the USA has become an international sport (as if we don't have enough depracation from the far left inside our country). Envy does that to small minded people. Hamburg's Der Spiegel runs a summary of press reactions across Europe and finds that Charlton Heston and the NRA are repeatedly singled out asGuess I won't be buying that BMW after all. A well armed society is a polite society. |
