This attitude has enormous political—and educational—implications. What happens if scientific truth conflicts with a politician's "spiritual truth"? This is not a theoretical problem, but a real one, as we see in debates about stem-cell research, abortion, genetic engineering, and global warming. Ignorance about evolution may be widespread, but it's not nearly as dangerous as dogmatic certainty about the real world based on faith alone.

I'm surprised that more hands didn't go up.

I can understand wanting to support your faith, but saying we should ignore reality when it conflicts with our preconceptions is just plain crazy. This is a shockingly literal example of a culture of denial.

Where did he get these peculiar and erroneous ideas about evolution? It can probably be traced back to his ministers or parents…were they evolutionary biologists? As I mentioned yesterday, Kent Hovind's background reveals no familiarity with even elementary science, yet he brags about being a science teacher, ...

Interesting side note... when I graduated with a degree in Asian Studies and Comparative Religion, (my focous was Islamic Terrorism and East Asia, and I know comparatively little about Christianity) I got an interesting set of offers:

1. CIA (not the state department job I was hoping for)

2. Teach Science, History and a number of other unrelated subjects in Christian high schools. (As far as I know they sent this offer to all those who graduated from the Comparative Religion program, without doing to much research into what the individuals believed... not that they are particularly good at research...)

3. Teaching English and Culture in China

And voila! Here I am in 100 degree Beijing! A...
