You need to know how to work the system in your favor. First of all, apply for SSD as soon as you start your temporary disability - this gives you a 6 month jump to get things all together. Ask doctors for copies of tests, labs, etc. Ask doctors for copies of the forms they've filled out for your disability.
Keep on top of everything.

OK so somebody knows what to do-That's cool, but old people ( at least in my family ) work till we can't, and are retired before we even know it's going to happen. So then you're stuck in this hole with no direction to get out and you depend on your kids. My brother and I are very happy to help our surviving mother, but she's an independent woman and it's killing her to take anything from us. The old lady next door was found eating cat-food because she wouldn't let us help. These people are proud and independent and shouldn't have to act like paralegals to get a check- It should be set up to just happen for them I think- Christ we can get to Mars, can't we do right by the folks too?

I have been going through this for 2 years now. Basically the entire process is based on the catch 22 system. The government forced disability retirement and required me to apply for SS benefits. It been quite a ride so far.

As with any insurance company,it is simply a matter of policy to turn down the initial applications.This is done hoping the applicant will simply give up.The government is no different than insurance companies in the private sector.
