We in America seem to be on auto-pilot when it comes to child rearing. We don't face issues until they are brought up, sometimes after it too late to prevent damage. We assume our children will never do drugs simply because we don't, or they won't have sex at an early age because we didn't.

As parents we need to formulate long-range plans deciding before an issue becomes a crisis -management situation. We all know drugs and sex will become an issue at some point so why not discuss these problems before hand?

I realize you cannot always know when the child will be first exposed to these issues but if we teach our children to respect their bodies and minds, which builds self-esteem, then hopefully they will make the right decision when the time does come.
