The way people see something as being more valuable as it becomes harder to obtain, has been the reason many of the species that were endangered have been and will be pushed over the edge to extinction. Sometimes the reason can be to prove to others that wealth can give someone the power to get something that is impossible for the average person to obtain, or even consider for a number of reasons. There is there is the notion among some wealthy (Who have the means to allow it to become a reality), that it is better to have a showcase of things that are valuable through rarity, than it is to have value for life of any kind, and be vain enough to prove it. How can we deal with a mentality like that? It's like a perverse form of monopoly. If something is valuable due to near extinction, it's elimination from the environment, will cause it's value to rise like a slain hero's signature. I'm sure these people fail to realize their power is no match for that of nature. Life will continue but it may not flower completely again, until we have finished our mission of self destruction. It can give you the same feeling of powerlessness as watching someone waste away with a terminal disease. We cannot stop extinction it Is a natural part of evolution, but it has been accelerated by us to the point where we can watch it happen. Maybe aversion therapy will cause us to define the extent of biodiversity needed to allow an ecosystem to be viable for life, including humanity, and give nature the job that it does far better than we do, and that is repair an injury to the environment the way a wound on the body can be healed over time.
We have to stop picking the wounds, or they will become ulcers.
