jklugman says: Wow, 5% of reported rapes result in a pregnancy, in a third of the cases the victim did not know about the pregnancy until the second trimester, nearly half of rape victims opt for an abortion. Via Josh Rosenau http://jgrr.blogspot.com/ and Lindsay Beyerstein http://majikthise.typepad.com (check out Lindsay's commentary on abortion bans with rape exemptions here: http://majikthise.typepad.com/majikthise_/2006/03/rape_and_aborti.html) Rape is a brutal and uncivilized personal attack. My statement below is not meant to redeem it in any way, shape or form. 5% is 5 out of 100. 95 others did not. a 3rd of 5 is a little over 1. 2 to 3 opt for an abortion. Percentage look wonderful unless you look at the amount of them. A sale offering 10% is nothing. Most stores give you that for just asking. Rape is not done for reproduction therefore pregnacy is not common. Skwirlinator, if the percentages are accurate you are correct, 1-2 out of 100 rape victims will be pregnant and not discover it until their second trimates, and 2-3 rape victims out 100 will be pregnant and opt for an abortion. However, even if the percentages are little, I believe that an abortion ban with no rape exemption will pose a tremendous burden on the few rape victims who do get pregnant. And that makes the law draconian to my way of thinking, no matter how small the number or percentage of women it affects. I do think its worth noting that half of rape victims who do get pregnant opt for an abortion. I suspect that the true percentage of pregnant rape victims who want an abo... Yes. This is justification that abortion is a required tool for such situations. There are others, but this is the primary one. Besides the fact that I belive that it is a woman's choice on whether or not she wants to have a child, the fact that the state will force (in this case) a raped woman to carry a child she does not want does great injury to the child. In some cases (mabe not all), this child will be unwanted byt thier mother. This is perhaps one of the most destructive emotional experiences a child can have. Even if the child is adopted, many adopted children grow up resenting the fact that they were given up for adoption. What if the child were to learn they were a product of rape? I used to be a ward of the court, and in my time in foster homes & group homes I came to know many boys and girls that we... CatWhisperer: Thanks for sharing your perspective. I hope that ALL infants given up for adoption would be adopted quickly and not spend time in foster homes or group homes, but I have no idea if that actually happens in reality. I think a rape-related pregnancy should be the only case where abortion is allowed. The only other way I could accept it is if the woman was forced to be sterilized at the same time. Also, if they can't pay for it, they should have to do some sort of community service to work it off (the obortion and the sterilization). Sorry, i'm sure there's a better word than sterilization, but you get my point. Anyway, I have good reason for this belief. I know 1 and have heard of many many other women that have had many obortions. For some reason, they think it's ok to just screw as many guy's as they want and then get an abortion and all is ok. If you don't want children, then either take birth ... |
