I agree with you, but I must also say that people need to learn to be tolerant and to ignore what people say as well. It's sad to say that, but it is the sad reality of this world. I know I am polite and respectful to people, but not everyone is like that. There are people that offend just to make themselves feel good. Great clip though. Excellent point. Also I agree totally with I Google Myself. If all mankind minus one were of one opinion, mankind would be no more justified in silencing that one person than he, if he had the power, would be justified in silencing mankind. ~John Stuart Mill, On Liberty, 1859 Wonderful quote, Wildcat. POP for that! Excellent clip and quotes. Excellent clip...some of the "protestors" in Denver and St.Paul came to mind when I read it. Freedom of speech isn't exactly there to protect speech you like but speech you DON'T like. Live with it. Bricks and stones.... "Free speech is indeed precious, but that doesn't mean that we have to defend without qualification every moron who abuses it"Yea, it does. Everyone has a right to their own opinion and a right to express that opinion. I consider a lot of opinions moronic, however, if I am to claim the right to free speech myself, then I must defend the "moron" I disagree with. Who is a moron and who is not is subjective; the right to free speech is not. Everyone, moron or no, is entitled to Freedom of Speech and that must be defended. “I agree with everything you say, but I would attack to the death your right to say it.” — Tom Stoppard, Lord Malquist & Mr. Moon, Chapter 2 The freedom of speech is NOT the destruction of others property. PETA for example may think that throwing blood on people wearing fur coats is a freedom of speech. It's not. Your freedom just *ended* when you used it to make your 'statement' by destroying other's property. "The freedom of speech is NOT the destruction of others property."I agree with you completely. The PETA people are a bunch of idiots and the example you give is a good one. Destroying the property of others is not free speech. That said, I don't see how the artist in the article destroyed anyone's property. He bought or made a statue of Jesus and put a pecker on it. As far as I can tell, the statue is an object bought and paid for by the artist. No one's property was damaged in any way by his statement. The statue is his property and that's that, he can do with his property what he wants. People who are offensive don't so much damage their target, as much as they, Display their own failings. However there can be a point where offensiveness can become cruelty. Then the stakes are higher. There may be offensive opinions which can be regarded as freedom of speech. They can also be regarded as attacks. We don't need to silence those who are offensive. We need to help each other build up defenses, so what was once painful can be ignored. By supporting each other And who defines "Offending"? Guys, I live in Iran and over here whatever you say that goverment doesn't like,is instantly marked by offending. Mind where you're going cause I know we are very distant in many aspects but this is the start. One day you will wake up and be known guilty in a COURT cause they thing you was offending someone by telling them "I love you". Too often the loudest, or the many, or the ones with the pen or the mic, will get away with an arbitrary measure of over-the-top criticism and statements light on fact, having safety in numbers, or other factors which give them perceived justification. When the retaliation comes in the same manner and fashion, especially from a surprise source which they haven't had time to pigeonhole and get the upper hand on, well, right away that retaliation is "offensive". It's "sarcastic". And the defensive denials come out hard and fast, only betraying the culpability of the original attacks. I read clearly, here, the allegory to recent public exchanges and the code of the little parable clipped here... |
