@ carrereinyes: do you celebrate Halloween where you live?
Last year, when we were in Cork on newyearseve, we discovered that the Irish people do not light firework to scare the ghosts from entering the new year. We were told that firework is usually saved for Halloween.
I was really hoping to be able to come back to Cork and celebrate this event. Unfortunately, this year it will not happen, but since you live appromiximately in the same area of Ireland, perhaps you can share a bit of what Halloween is like overthere.

Looking for a nice Irish quote to finish this message in style, I stumbled upon this one:
"May the devil make a ladder of your backbone - While he is picking apples in the garden of Hell”.

That's a great quote
Sorry, no fireworks on New Year's Eve - we open the front door and the back door (freezing ourselves in the process) to send the old year away and usher in the luck of the new year through the front door. We are usually very drunk when we do this
As for Halloween, it's bonfires, costumes, trick or treating, bobbing for apples and money and the usual getting very drunk! Barnbrack cake is eaten with a hidden brass ring. He or she who gets the ring will marry first (?!). Banshees...be afraid. And you...?

Afraid? That's put mildly. I would be scared as hell, most of all to be the one who finds the ring
