disenchantedcitizen says: I’ve seen two of these, one just west of Denver, Colorado (it was featured in a Woody Allen movie) and the other near the beach in Fort Walton, Florida. Ever hear of the Lustron house? They were all-stainless steel prefab houses originally indended as cheap housing for returning GIs and to relieve the postwar housing shortage. They cost somewhat three-quarters as much as more conventional houses being built at the time and were designed for as close to zero maintenance as possible - no painting or roof replacements after 60 years. All were built between 1947 and 1950, and some 2000 still exist (there`s two in my hometown that I`ve seen), and a number are on the National Register of Historic Places. |
