This could have been easily overlooked, but 1858, represents an important date in the history of food packaging. We take it as common place today, but the screw-on top for a glass jar was the cutting edge of innovation once.

On Nov. 30, 1858, a 26-year-old Philadelphia tinsmith named John L. Mason secured a patent on a glass canning jar. Its innovation was a screw-on top, and no one ever has had to mess with wax or paraffin seals since, unless they were old-fashioned and set in their ways.
