For those Fundamentalists that insist that atheists choose not to believe so they can live a life of debauchery and decadence.

Not sure I've ever known a truly decadent atheist. I suppose they're out there, but are surely not the majority.

I certainly didn't mean to imply that there was a correlation either. In fact, evidence shows that atheists are under represented in prison populations compared to the general population.

I know you didn't, and I didn't take it that way. I was reflecting on the speciousness of the argument that people become atheists so they can plunge into debauchery.

OK! I gotcha. As far as the debauchery motivation, a person certainly doesn't need to be an atheist to indulge there. Folks tend to have strange ideas of what atheists are. They still harbor some strange notion that we must hold secret meeting in basements of ruined churches where we indulge in all manner of unspeakable acts. After all, we're all amoral, selfish, hedonists. I'm afraid I'd be a great disappointment if that's what they're looking for.

I'm officially inviting you to our orgy-meeting at the church down the street (we don't meet in ruined ones... active ones are much more fun). Bring all your friends, some alcohol and kittens for the buffet. We have three speakers lined up, and one of the topics to be discussed is How to Specifically Persecute and Ridicule Christians.

Seriously... I think it's easier to live a life that could ...

So, there's some atheist gene and people are born to be atheists? Neato. Must be something we can develop a treatment for - like hippies.

MOdern atheism was started in order to avoid sexual mores. see Bertrand Russell's comments on this.

Of course you choose to be an atheist. No one forces the choice on you. I spent a good chunk of my life as an atheist. Of course my University education helped with the atheist indoctrination process. Now I choose to follow God as a Christian. (no one forced this choice on me either).

Seriously... I think it's easier to live a life that could be termed "moral" when you take on the responsibility yourself through thought and actions rather than having an outside force/person/group scare the crap out of you to *make* you live "morally.

Gwendolyn,
No one forces you to go to church. No one forces you to be a Christian. Personal choice and responsibilty is what God teaches us to nurture within ourselves. The problem with setting your own standard of morality is that you can always change what that morality means. You, might be great person but as you can probably guess we don't want everyone setting their own standards.

Hahahaha! Judging by the sexual mores of theists this is truly a silly position to take.
Of course you choose to be an atheist.
Oh really? I suppose the lack of evidence for a god has nothing to do with it?
Of course my University education helped with the atheist indoctrination process
Of course! Except I didn't attend Atheist U. I missed out on the "indroctrination process".
Now I choose to follow God as a Christian
No indoctrination needed there! Hahaha!
You, might be great person but as you can probably guess we do...

Why didn't I think of that? We want our moral standards set by Bronze Age goat herders. Well you've convinced me.
Aw, shucks. You give them too much credit. They were sheep herders. Goats tend to be harder to herd (?). Or something. I'm not a sheperd. But I know goats are hard headed. LOL

Really? I must have had memory implants then, because I distinctly remember being *forced* to go to church.

You mean kinda like pedophile preachers and bishops do? Are we no...

Just a short comment. It's always struck me as odd how religionists insist that being moral under threat of punishment or promise of reward is somehow more moral than doing so because it's the right thing to do. And due to their religious indoctrination that teaches that people are sinful (using the supernatural link of talking snake and magic apple) how could they possibly come up with something like "do unto others..." which, by the way, is way older than Xtianity. Evidently concepts like compassion and empathy are foreign to them.
