I once clipped an article that stated that mental health treatments are 300 years behind the rest of modern medicine! Having said that, I do believe that antidepressants help a lot of people, but I also believe that our mental health care system is broken and in need of much repair. To some degree, I feel like this is just another excuse that we're coming up with to try and figure out what causes these events. While I don't doubt there is a connection, I don't think it's an anti-depressant one. I think it's a mental health connection. I know that there's studies about the link between suicide and anti-depressants, but I am also skeptical about those. It seems to be common sense that someone with a mental health disorder requiring psychiatric medicine might have issues such as these. More research would certainly have to be performed. 1.Antidepressants? 2.A "system" which ignored BLATANT and repeated warning signs of instability. 3. Being afraid to get involved and be proactive to help someone who was in desperate need of care? 3.The unbelievable ease in procuring firearms? TAKE YOUR PICK!!!!!! In the United States a 2005 independent report stated that 11% of women and 5% of men in the non-Insitutionalised population (2002) now take antidepressants (wiki). That's an awful lot of firearm-crazed lunatics out there. A 2007 study purports that 25% of Americans were overdiagnosed with depression, regardless of any medical intervention, the findings were based on a national survey of 8,098 people.(wiki) You can probably see where this is going, though I feel that 8098 is hardly an accurate representation on the entire populatio n.
