Silkweaver says: Looks the kind of gadget I must have My idea of the next phase: A Beam me up button, to instantly teleport to the site. @Silkweaver A Beam me up button, to instantly teleport to the site. But it won't be you! It will be a replica of you, with a copy of your memory and atomic structure, but a copy none the less! Like a perfect xerox. Others won't be able to tell the difference, but "you" will be de-atomized. Well, I'll take the risk... No significant experience leaves "me" as "me" was before. So what's the big deal Cool ! I will add it to my wish list No significant experience leaves "me" as "me" was before. So what's the big dealYou won't be the "me" you're referring to. You won't be a "changed" you, in other words. The output will be a completely different person altogether (albeit one that looks like you and has "your" memories). It's like this: if you make a copy off of a xerox machine, the "copy" is altogether not the original, even though it looks exactly like it. But in your case, the original is completely destroyed (that's you) and the copy will take it's place. Others may not be able to tell the difference, but "you" will cease to exist. That's why I always questioned the use of the transporter in Star ... I seems to me I can be faultlessly copied as many times as needed, with no significant loss of identity. Perhaps this will work only for those holding this belief btw, if we got that far, a good SF book I would recommend is Mindscan by Robert J. Sawyer |
