jimbo1000 says: I have only clipped a very short piece but this article goes deeply into the subject. I find my religion needs scientific confirmation or at least is basically rational The inherent problem won't go away. When demonstrable scientific facts proves scripture wrong, the inevitable outcome is that one must admit that scripture is not from a divine source, certainly not from an intelligent god. And after that... Pop for Aces hi Aces, I think that the question is at a deeper lever than scripture. If there is a God then it existed before scripture which is man made and consequently imperfect. Organized religion is man's attempt to get to the truth. Either existence is purposeful or it is meaningless. There is no way of telling scientifically which is correct. One has to make a choice. In practice atheists have to behave as if existence does have meaning. Hi jimbo1000, I followed you up to this point: Organized religion is man's attempt to get to the truth. If that were true, organized religion would adjust to facts found in nature. It would have discarded scripture long ago. In fact, organized religion does the opposite. It pretends it "has" the truth already, and every evidence that disproves any dogma or faith is violently opposed. Giordano Bruno, Galileo, Darwin... Either existence is purposeful or it is meaningless. These are not mutually exclusive, and meaning for one is not the same meaning for all. To assume that "if there is no god then life is meaningless" is a false supposition from the start. I kno... Spot on again Aces. I love how you can so simply present a discussion that cuts right tot he point. |
