pkronfield says: An acquaintance of mine says PhD stands for "piled higher and deeper". I know a lot of purportedly highly intellegent and educated people who don't have enough sense to pour piss out of a boot. But I'll grant these "mental giants" one thing - - they have boundless quantities of pomposity and arrogance. Some fo the qualities possessed by the divine candidate, B. Hussein Obama I think education is very important and admire those seeking to master an area of study. However, I certainly agree that intellect has nothing to do with it. One of my favorite PhDs says there is more wisdom in one who drives a taxi cab than one going from kindergarten to a PhD without experience outside of education. It really messes the brain. There is no diversity and little ability to apply logic. The ability to reason degenerates . I hold degrees and I'm thinking about pursuing another. Regardless of whatever one may think of those in the field of academia ( I myself hold them in VERY low regard) I think it is prudent to say that the more education, the better. A good example is to read the comments of dmgivern. She claims to hold 2 PhDs, but for some reason cannot figure out how to not be in debt. Two PhD's huh? That's a new one for me. I hold three BSc's - physics, math, and oceanography. I started school later than most, having spent some 4 years in the fleet overseas. By the time I earned my Oceanography degree, I couldn't even contemplate advanced degrees as I wanted to get back out in the real world, and felt stifled in academia. I found the campus oppressive, and my first job out of school was in Greece, conducting oceanography in the Aegean. I never looked back. Many of the PhD's I know (and I know a lot of them), are arrogant, pompous, and have little common sense. They tend to measure one's worth by your degree and not by life experience. One slight error, but really makes no difference. Bush never went to Nam, but flew those very dangerous Starfighters during the VN war while serving in the National Guard stateside. The left makes a big deal out of him being AWOL or somesuch lies. In fact, her served, he put himself in harm's way every time he strapped on one of those jets, and had his group been ordered to Nam, I have no doubt he would have gone and served honorably and bravely. |
